Psychiatrist thinks you should change your life every 10 years...

I have often been told that for me it is easier to change my life because I don’t have children and therefore have less obligations. I recognize that having children at school or university age means that the financial pressure is probably bigger and that you have less time for yourself and less time to contemplate change. But all that makes it even more relevant to consider how important a change is for your well-being and feeling of success. And you don’t have to do it alone. And it does not have to be tomorrow.

Food for thought: Psychiatrist Nassir Ghaemi argues in his article on February 5th 2023 in the Daily Mail that you should change career every 10 years. Why is this a good idea? Because once you become successful at something, you just stop progressing and end up feeling unfulfilled. This is quite a tall order seeing that many people that are successful see no reason to change. Perfectly understandable taking human behaviour into account.

Maybe the trigger is that we could be better at another area. We don’t know this if we don’t try. Exploring other areas can lead to surprising insights into oneself. If nothing else it triggers the brain and leads to new experiences and a wider view of the world.

Change is often difficult and challenging. Even more so when things are not going your way or you are not happy doing what you are doing. So also think about the benefits of changing when you have been in a nice job for some time and know deep down that you as a person would benefit from new surroundings and new experiences.

Strategize the next chapter of your (working) life. An indepth journey into who you really are as a person including your vitality, talents, style & colours.
